The EX12 is the ideal partner for the Fostex PD-6 DVD-RAM when used stationary or "on-cart" providing extended recording time, multiple media choices, automated background mirroring and power supply options.

PD-6 "docks" to the EX12 via the dedicated expansion connector on its base and is securely attached by locking "arms" on both sides. Once connected, the operator now has a choice of three recording mediums (or four if 9056 internal hard drive is fitted to the PD-6): a 12cm "full size" DVD-RAM drive (4.7GB per side), a 40GB hard disk drive and the PD-6's 8cm "mini" DVD-RAM drive (1.46GB per side). Choosing one of the medias as the primary recording drive then allows the operator to copy files/takes and/or duplicate "disks" between the other and vice-a-versa. When using the 40GB hard disk drive as the primary recording media, it is further possible to set the EX12 to automatically "mirror" files/takes to the EX-12's 12cm DVD-RAM drive in three different modes:
Mirroring
Recording to both hard disk and 12cm DVD-RAM simultaneously. Even file edits performed after recording will be reflected over both disks.
Immediate Auto Copy
Recording to hard disk with immediate copy to 12cm DVD-RAM.
Background Auto Copy
Audio recorded to the hard disk is copied to 12cm DVD-RAM automatically while PD-6/EX12 is idling (i.e. not in record). This flexibility means that at the end of a day's shooting, the DVD-RAM can be handed off to the cutting rooms almost immediately while a duplicate set of files/takes are held on the hard disk drive until deleted by the operator.
The EX12's 40GB hard disk is conveniently formatted in 4.7GB partitions, matching one side of a 12cm "full size" DVD-RAM disc and thus storing the equivalent of eight 12cm "full size" DVD-RAM sides of files/takes. The EX12 also features both IEEE1394 "Firewire" and USB2.0/1.1 ports which allows PC and MAC access to the 12cm DVD-RAM drive as an "external" device. While files/takes can be recorded directly to the internal 40GB hard drive if selected as the primary recording medium, files/takes need to then be transferred to either the EX12's 12cm DVD-RAM or the PD-6's 8cm DVD-RAM in order to export them. This can be done automatically or as a batch process as previously mentioned.
The EX12 can be powered by either mains AC or a 12v DC source and also features a 12v DC output for powering the docked PD-6 through the EX12, alleviating the need for multiple power supplies. Measuring 2U high, the EX12 can be fitted with supplied "rack ears" if so desired for rack-mounting into a flight-cased cart or for edit suite/cutting-room use.
